On Friday, October 16 citizens will be gathering from all around the country in Washington, DC to voice their opposition to H.R.1599, aka the DARK Act* which would “Deny Americans the Right to Know” whether their food contains genetically engineered organisms. Yes, you read that correctly, if this bill passes we will never know if our food is GMO, and it already passed the House of Representatives! So, next stop is the Senate Agriculture and Forestry Committee where it is scheduled to be heard on October 21.
If this bill reaches the full Senate for a vote, it is imperative that our Senators vote a resounding and collective “NO!”
We have provided Senator Menendez with quite a bit of information about GMOs. We have explained in great detail the negative impact the DARK Act would have on the consumer. We have underlined the fact that 90% of consumers, a super-majority of our legislators’ constituents, support mandatory GMO labeling.
But still he hasn’t committed to standing up for us against corporate interests by promising to oppose the DARK Act. The message from his office is that he is still in “listening mode” and open to hearing from all “stakeholders”.
Who are these “stakeholders”? We say, everybody who eats food is a stakeholder.
